Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2024 | Free Trip to London

An incredible and longstanding opportunity has been announced by the Royal Commonwealth Society for young students. It’s the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2024. This competition brings together thousands of students from various schools. Its aim is to empower young people, encouraging them to express themselves through writing and contribute to making the world a better place.

Since back to 1883, this international essay competition has been a platform for students across the 52 Commonwealth countries. Each year, participants explore a theme that resonates globally. For the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2024, the theme revolves around resilience during challenging times and the strength found in community and cultural celebration amidst global difficulties.

Participants are categorized into Seniors and Juniors. Seniors are aged between 14 to 18, while Juniors are under 14. Both categories have different essay topics tailored to their age groups. Winners and runners-up are selected from each category.

One of the most exciting aspects of QCEC 2024 is the opportunity for school students to win a trip to London. This week-long trip includes educational and cultural events, enriching the experience for the winners. Participating in this competition not only hones writing skills but also broadens horizons through interactions with peers from around the world.

Eligibility & Criteria for Qualification

You must fit certain criteria:

  1. Categories:
  • Senior Category: You must be under 14 years old by May 16, 2010.
  • Junior Category: You must be between 14 and 18 years old, born between May 16, 2005, and May 15, 2010.
  1. Eligible Applicants:
  • People from all Commonwealth countries and territories can enter.
  •  People from Ireland, Hong Kong, and Zimbabwe are also eligible to apply.
  1. Non-Commonwealth Countries:
  • If you’re from a country outside the Commonwealth, you need to submit your entry through your Local Royal Commonwealth Society Branch.

Rules for Essay Competition 

  • Write in English only. Essays in other languages won’t be accepted.
  • Senior Category essays must be no more than 1500 words, and Junior Category essays must be no more than 750 words. Going over the limit will lead to disqualification.
  • The word count includes all types of writing, like essays, poems, or letters.
  • References and footnotes don’t count toward the word limit.
  • Don’t include personal details in the uploaded essay. Personal information is only required during the application process.
  • Choose topics based on the Senior or Junior category.
  • No copying from other sources allowed. Plagiarized entries will be rejected automatically.

For Senior Category

  • What small things can you do to help with the climate crisis?
  • What is the biggest problem in the world today, and how can Commonwealth values help solve it?
  • How can your culture’s values improve cooperation and community in the Commonwealth?
  • Write a letter to your President or Prime Minister about achieving peace, liberty, and progress.

For Junior Category

  • What new things can you do to help the environment?
  • Talk with your grandparents about staying strong and hopeful. What can you learn from them?
  • If you could talk to sea creatures during a beach clean-up, what would they say, and how would you respond?
  • How do you make friends while on a school exchange in a different Commonwealth country? Consider what you have in common and what makes you different.

To enter the Essay Competition, follow these steps:

  1. Send an email to competitions@royalsociety.org with the following information:
  • Your full name and ID number.
  • The name of your school.
  • If you’re submitting individually, provide the details of an adult submitting on your behalf.
  • Include details about your current school level.

Closing Date

  • The closing date for the Essay Competition is 15 May 2024.
