The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2024 is a Canadian initiative designed to educate and empower international students by teaching them Canadian research methods and techniques. This 12-week research program, held at Canadian universities, allows interns to work under the supervision of professors or faculty members across a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences. The fully-funded internship offers students the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects, enabling them to explore both specific and broad categories of interest.
Available at nearly 70 universities across Canada, this top-tier internship includes contributions from academic partners worldwide. These partners, such as Universities Australia, Brazil’s Araucaria Foundation, the China Scholarship Council, Colombia’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Fulbright Canada, and Universities UK International, support the program by providing expertise and ideas that enhance the interns’ experience.
This prestigious internship offers students from different universities the chance to work together on innovative projects, creating life-changing opportunities to collaborate with peers from various countries and institutions. Participants can build a global network of Mitacs Globalink alumni, which fosters ongoing cooperation for a better future. For instance, a Harvard student collaborated with Queen’s University to develop a rapid screening instrument for Lyme disease pathogens, while researchers from the University of Alberta and Yukon University partnered with mining companies to restore vegetation to Yukon mines.
The Globalink Research Internship is highly competitive, aiming to attract talented researchers from Mitacs’ international partners. The program’s main goal is to create a bridge between Canada and the global research community. In addition to research experience, interns have the chance to attend industry and government events and participate in professional development courses, expanding their skills and knowledge. According to surveys, 95% of participants speak positively about the internship’s impact. Alumni wishing to pursue further studies in Canada may also qualify for the Globalink Graduate Fellowship.
