Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of one of the participating countries
- Be at least 18 years old by August of the program’s academic year (for 2025-26, by August 2025)
- Be a full-time undergraduate in good standing at an accredited institution
- Have at least one academic year remaining after May of the program year (e.g., one year left after May 2026 if applying for 2025-26)
- Communicate effectively in English
- Demonstrate a commitment to community service

Ineligibility Criteria
Applicants are ineligible if they:
- Are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents
- Are currently studying, training, or researching in the U.S.
- Live or work outside the eligible countries
- Participated in U.S. government-funded exchanges for over six weeks and have not met the two-year residency requirement
- Applied for U.S. permanent residency in the past three years
- Are employees or close relatives of Global UGRAD administrative staff
- Are local employees of U.S. missions or USAID staff during or within one year of employment

- Near East (Middle East and North Africa): Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, etc.
- South and Central Asia: Bangladesh, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and others
- Western Hemisphere: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and others
Application Process
- Register on the UGRAD Student Portal, confirm your email, and set your password.
- Complete sections on eligibility, personal and academic information, English proficiency, interests, community service, and employment.
- Write two essays (350-750 words each) on specified topics.
- Submit two recommendations: one from a faculty member and one from a mentor or employer.
- Attach your transcript, photo ID, and recommendation letters.
- Submit your completed application by the deadline, ensuring all information is accurate.
