Fully Funded | IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program 2024

In the realm of academia, where the pursuit of knowledge knows no boundaries, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and FIMU have been at the forefront of fostering excellence and innovation. Since its inception in 2016, their fellowship program has been a beacon of hope for postgraduate students hailing from developing countries, nurturing their dreams of attaining a PhD in the mathematical sciences.

The Breakout Graduate Fellowship stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of IMU and FIMU to support and uplift budding mathematicians from underprivileged backgrounds. With the aim of empowering individuals who exhibit exceptional talent and drive, up to four laureates are bestowed with this prestigious fellowship each year, paving the way for a transformative journey that spans a maximum duration of four years.

At the heart of this initiative lies a simple yet profound mission: to provide comprehensive financial support to deserving scholars, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their academic pursuits. The fellowship covers a spectrum of expenses, including tuition fees, travel expenses to the host institution (if different from their home institution), accommodation, and basic living expenses. With a maximum funding of USD 10,000 per year, the fellowship alleviates the financial burden, allowing scholars to focus wholeheartedly on their studies and research endeavors.

However, the Breakout Graduate Fellowship is not merely about financial assistance; it is a beacon of opportunity for those with a passion for mathematics and a commitment to excellence. Professional mathematicians are called upon to nominate individuals who exhibit not only academic prowess but also a deep-seated enthusiasm for research and teaching in mathematics. Nominees must demonstrate a consistently strong academic record, starting from their high school years, reflecting their dedication and potential to contribute meaningfully to the field.

What sets this fellowship apart is its inclusivity and global reach. Nominees hailing from developing countries, including their own home countries, are encouraged to apply, embracing diversity and celebrating the rich tapestry of mathematical talent across the globe. To ensure eligibility, the country of citizenship, residency, and the country where the study will take place must all be listed among the Developing Countries.

In essence, the Breakout Graduate Fellowship transcends geographical boundaries, socio-economic barriers, and cultural divides, serving as a catalyst for change in the landscape of mathematical academia. It is a beacon of hope for aspiring mathematicians, igniting their passion, fueling their aspirations, and propelling them towards a future filled with endless possibilities.

As we look towards the horizon, let us celebrate the transformative power of education, the boundless potential of the human mind, and the profound impact of initiatives like the Breakout Graduate Fellowship in shaping the future of mathematical sciences, one scholar at a time.
